Set up an iPad or iPhone
A new register takes about ten minutes: install the app, pair the hardware in iOS, then pair the device to a register in OLET.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”- An iPad or iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
- The OLET app from the App Store.
- A register already created in the back office, under Settings > Outlets and registers.
An iPad in a stand is the usual counter setup. An iPhone works the same way and suits a stall or a floor sale.
Set the device up
Section titled “Set the device up”- Put the device on your shop’s Wi-Fi. The register app needs a connection to take a sale.
- Pair your hardware in the iOS Settings app, under Bluetooth, before you open OLET. That means the receipt printer and any Bluetooth barcode scanner. OLET can only see hardware iOS has already paired.
- Install OLET and open it.
- Pair the device to a register. See Pair your first register.
- In the register app, open Settings > Devices and set up the receipt printer and, if you take card, the card reader.
Turn on Keep screen on in Settings > Register if the device sits in a powered stand. The register still returns to PIN sign-in when it has been idle, so this does not leave the till open to anyone walking past.
The permissions the app asks for
Section titled “The permissions the app asks for”iOS asks each time a feature needs one, not all at once when you install. OLET never asks for a permission on a screen that does not use it.
- Bluetooth. Asked when you connect a receipt printer, a barcode scanner or a card reader. Without it, none of them will pair.
- Camera. Asked the first time you scan a barcode with the camera, and when you scan the QR code that pairs this device to a register.
- Location. Asked only if you use a Square card reader, which requires it on both iPhone and iPad. Card payments cannot be taken without it. If you use Zettle, or take no card payments at all, you will never see this prompt.
- Microphone. Asked by the card reader software when it connects to a reader.
Printing needs no permission of its own beyond Bluetooth, and scanning needs no location.
Changing your mind later
Section titled “Changing your mind later”iOS asks once. If you answer no, it will not ask again, and the feature stays off until you turn it back on in the iOS Settings app under OLET. This bites most often with the camera: the scanning band will keep saying access is off, however many times you close and reopen it. The receipt printer dialog does the same for Bluetooth: it says “Bluetooth is off for OLET. Turn it on in Settings to find printers.” and shows an Open settings button that jumps straight to the right page.
When the app needs an update
Section titled “When the app needs an update”OLET occasionally requires an app update to keep selling. If a register is running a version that is too far out of date, it shows a full-screen Update required message: “This version of Olet is no longer supported. Update the app to keep selling.” Select Open App Store (iPhone or iPad) to go straight to the listing and update. There is no way to dismiss this screen and continue on the old version.
More than one device on a register
Section titled “More than one device on a register”Several devices can be signed in to the same register. Settings that belong to the register, such as the paired printer and whether receipts print automatically, are the same on all of them. Change it on one and the rest follow.
