Discounts and price overrides
OLET has two separate ways to take money off a sale by hand, and they are genuinely two different things. One changes what a single line costs. The other takes an amount off the whole order. They are granted separately, so you may be able to do one and not the other.
If an action described here is missing from your screen, your role does not include it. Ask a manager to sign in, or ask an owner to add it to your role.
Change what one line costs
Section titled “Change what one line costs”- Tap the line in the cart. It expands.
- Type the new figure into Price ($), or type a percentage into Discount (%).
The two fields are linked. Typing 20 into Discount (%) rewrites Price ($) to 20% off the original, and typing a price directly does the same job in one step. Use whichever the customer is asking for.
The line then shows its original price struck through with the new price beside it, so the customer can see what came off.
Both fields are the same ability, because both of them pin what that line costs. If Price ($) is grayed out on your session, Discount (%) will not be there either.
A gift card line is the exception. It never offers Discount (%), because a card sold below its face value and then spent at face value is money given away. You can still change Price ($) on it, which sells a smaller card rather than a discounted one.
Take an amount off the whole order
Section titled “Take an amount off the whole order”- Select Discount below the cart. It is grayed out while the cart is empty.
- Choose Percent (%) or Amount ($).
- Type the figure and select Apply.
An Order discount row appears in the totals box with the amount on it. The row carries two icons: one reopens the dialog to change the figure, the other removes it.
Removing an order discount is always allowed. Changing one is not, so if the edit icon is missing you can still take the discount off, you just cannot re-enter it.
OLET refuses a few things here:
- Enter a valid amount. The box was empty or zero.
- Percentage cannot exceed 100%. You are on Percent (%) and typed more than 100.
- Discount exceeds order total. You are on Amount ($) and typed more than the order comes to. The message includes the order total, so you can see what the ceiling is.
The order in which they stack
Section titled “The order in which they stack”A line price you set by hand is the price that line is sold at. The order discount then comes off what the cart adds up to after that.
Promotions are a third thing again, they apply on their own, and they need neither of these abilities. See Promotions and voucher codes on the register.
Discounts on a return
Section titled “Discounts on a return”The return screen has the same Discount action, and it behaves the same way. It only applies to the exchange items you have added, because the lines being returned are already fixed at what the customer originally paid for them.
If it goes wrong
Section titled “If it goes wrong”- The Price field will not accept your typing. It only takes digits and a decimal point. Enter 12.50, not $12.50.
- The Discount chip is grayed out. The cart is empty. Add a line first.
- The discount vanished when you changed the quantity. It did not. Discount (%) is a per-unit percentage, so the line total moves with the quantity while the discount stays the same.
- You cannot find the discount action at all. Your role does not include it. Order discounts and line prices are granted separately, so the one you are looking for may be the one you do not have.
Where to go next
Section titled “Where to go next”Read Take payment for what happens once the totals are right.
