Gift cards on the register

A gift card is stored value your store sells and the customer spends later. On the register you do three things with them: sell one, take one as payment, and check what is left on one.

This feature depends on your plan. Check Settings > Billing to see what your plan includes.

  1. Add the gift card product to the cart, by searching for it or from a quick key.
  2. Sell gift card opens. Select a preset amount if your store has set some up, or type the value into Amount ($).
  3. Choose how the card is issued. Auto-generate creates a new card number for you, and Number of cards next to it sells several identical cards in one go. Scan preprinted is for the physical cards you already have on the rack.
  4. On Scan preprinted, scan or type the code. OLET checks the card straight away and tells you whether it will activate a new card or reload one that already has a balance on it, showing you the balance before you commit.
  5. Select Add to cart.

The card appears in the cart as an ordinary line, badged as a gift card. Nothing is loaded onto it yet. Take payment as usual, and the value goes on the card when the sale completes.

A gift card line can be re-priced but never discounted. Selling a card below its face value and letting the customer spend it at face value gives money away, so the discount field is not offered on that line.

  1. On Collect payment, select the gift card payment method.
  2. Scan or type the card code into Gift card code, then select Continue.

OLET shows the balance before it takes anything. If the card covers the whole sale, the sale finishes. If it does not, OLET applies whatever is on the card and tells you what is still due, and you take the rest on another payment method.

Open Gift Card Lookup from the menu. Scan or type the code into Gift card code and select Look up.

You get the last four digits of the card, its balance, and its recent transactions with the balance after each one. That history is what answers “I am sure there was more on this”.

Print card prints the card on the paired receipt printer.

  • Not selling gift cards. Your store has gift card sales switched off. Existing cards can still be used to pay. An owner or manager turns selling back on in the back office under Settings > Gift cards, with the Sell gift cards switch.
  • Card not found. The code did not match anything. Retype it in full rather than scanning, because a partial scan looks the same as a wrong card.
  • Card not usable. The card exists but is not in a state you can sell onto or spend from. The message names the state it is in.
  • Minimum load amount or Maximum load amount. Your store sets bounds on what a card can be loaded with. The message tells you the figure.
  • Enter an amount greater than 0. The amount box is empty or zero. Add to Cart stays disabled until it is a real amount.
  • A card with an expiry date cannot be topped up. Sell a new card instead.
  • No printer set up or Printer not connected when printing a card. The card itself is fine. Pair or check the printer and print again. See Hardware > Receipt printers.
