Supported hardware
The register app runs on an iPad or an iPhone, and everything else plugs into that. This page is the list of what it talks to, so you can check a piece of kit before you buy it.
The register itself
Section titled “The register itself”An iPad or an iPhone running iOS 16 or later. An iPad in a stand is the normal counter setup, and the app works in portrait or landscape on both. An iPhone works too, and is what you would use for a market stall or a floor-walking sale.
You do not need a separate device for the back office. That runs in a browser on any computer.
Receipt printer
Section titled “Receipt printer”A thermal receipt printer that speaks ESC/POS, on 80mm paper. Printing is proven on an Epson TM-m30 over Bluetooth on an iPad, and that is the printer to buy if you want the setup with the fewest surprises.
Two ways to connect:
- Bluetooth. On an iPad or iPhone, this means an Epson printer, because Apple only lets an app talk to a Bluetooth printer the printer maker has registered with Apple. Pair it in the iOS Settings app first, then find it in OLET.
- Network. Any printer that accepts raw printing on port 9100 over your shop’s Wi-Fi or wired network. OLET can find these by itself, or you can type the printer’s IP address in by hand.
Cash drawer
Section titled “Cash drawer”A cash drawer that opens from the receipt printer, on the usual RJ11 kick cable. There is no separate connection to the drawer: the printer opens it, so you need a printer paired before a drawer will do anything.
OLET supports both of the wiring options drawers ship with, pin 2 and pin 5. If the drawer does not open, that setting is the first thing to change. Setup is in Set up a receipt printer.
Barcode scanner
Section titled “Barcode scanner”Three kinds work, and you can mix them:
- A keyboard-wedge scanner, Bluetooth or USB, which is most scanners on the market. It pretends to be a keyboard, so it needs no setup in OLET at all. Pair it to the iPad the way you would a keyboard and start scanning.
- A Socket Mobile scanner, which connects to OLET directly rather than pretending to be a keyboard. This is the one OLET knows by name and can show you the status of. Supported on iPad, iPhone, and Android (Android needs the Socket Mobile Companion app installed as well).
- The device camera, with no scanner at all. Slower than a scanner, and fine for a quiet counter or a stocktake on the shop floor. See Scan with the camera.
Card reader
Section titled “Card reader”A Square reader, a Zettle reader, or a Stripe reader (a Bluetooth reader or a countertop terminal), paired to the register. Which one you use depends on which payment provider you have connected, not on the hardware you own, so start from the payments side:
What is not supported
Section titled “What is not supported”- A cash drawer with its own USB or network connection. The drawer has to hang off the printer.
- A printer connected by USB cable to the tablet, or a Bluetooth Low Energy printer. Bluetooth means the Epson pairing above, and network means port 9100. There is no third option yet.
