Zettle card reader

Zettle takes card payments on a Zettle reader, settled to your PayPal Zettle account. There are three steps: enable Zettle for the store once, sign in on each register, and pair a reader through Zettle’s own screen.

You’ll need an active PayPal Zettle account and a Zettle card reader.

  1. In the back office, go to Settings > Payment settings.
  2. On the Zettle tile, select Enable. There is no sign-in on this page, because each register signs in to Zettle itself.
  3. A “Zettle enabled.” message appears, the tile reads Enabled, and a Set up your registers window opens with the steps to follow on each register. Select Done when you have read it.

Enabling Zettle creates the Zettle payment method, or switches the existing one back on, so the register has a card button to offer. If another payment method is already called Zettle, OLET does not create a second one and tells you to rename it and enable Zettle again. You don’t add Zettle from Add payment. See Payment methods overview.

Enabling Zettle makes the payment method available. Signing in happens per device, so every register does this once, on the device itself. If Zettle isn’t in the register’s payment list yet, tap the status icon and choose Sync now.

  1. In the register app, open Settings, then Zettle card reader.
  2. Select Sign in to Zettle and sign in with your store’s Zettle account.
  3. OLET hands you straight to Zettle’s card reader screen once you are signed in.

The dialog says which state the register is in: Signed in to Zettle, Not signed in to Zettle, or Checking Zettle….

Sign in with the same Zettle account on every register. Payments go to whichever account the register is signed in to.

If Zettle isn’t enabled for the store, the dialog shows Zettle not connected, with a note that an admin can connect it in your OLET account (Settings > More settings > Payment settings), and a Check again button. Enable Zettle in the back office, then select Check again.

Pairing is Zettle’s own screen, not ours. From Zettle card reader, select Card reader settings and pair the reader there, following Zettle’s instructions for your model.

OLET cannot tell you whether a reader is currently connected, so the dialog does not claim to. Open Card reader settings to pair one or to check the one you have.

A register that is signed in but has no reader paired is only half set up. The sign-in succeeds and the card payment then fails at the reader, so do both before the first customer.

On Collect payment, select the Zettle payment method, then follow the prompts on the reader. The register shows the amount while it waits, and moves on to the confirmation panel once the payment lands. If it does not go through, the register shows the reason the terminal gave, and the amount stays owed on the sale.

If the register is not signed in to Zettle, the card dialog shows an error with a Sign in to Zettle button. Select it and sign in. The banner then reads “Signed in to Zettle” and “Tap Retry to charge.” Select Retry to take the payment. Nothing is charged until you do.

Sign out of Zettle in the same dialog ends the session on that device only. Other registers keep theirs, and the store’s setting in the back office is untouched.

Signing out is not the same as unlinking the register from your store. That is a different row in Settings, and it does something much larger. See Settings > Devices.

Disable on the Zettle tile opens Disable Zettle? It warns that card payments through Zettle will stop at every register as soon as you confirm, and that sales you have already taken are not affected. Select Disable Zettle to confirm. The payment method is switched off, and the tile reads Not enabled. Select Enable to turn it back on.
