Gift card settings
These are the store-wide rules for gift cards: whether you sell them at all, what a customer can load onto one, whether a card expires, and what prints when one is sold.
Go to Settings > Gift cards in the back office. Make your changes, then select Save changes at the top right.
This feature depends on your plan. Check Settings > Billing to see what your plan includes.
Turn gift cards on
Section titled “Turn gift cards on”Under General, turn Sell gift cards on. That is the switch that lets a cashier sell and top up a card at checkout. With it off, gift cards are not offered on the register at all.
Selling and redeeming cards on the till is covered in Gift cards on the register, and taking one as payment in Gift cards as payment. The cards themselves, and the balances on them, live in Gift cards.
Amounts
Section titled “Amounts”- Minimum amount ($) and Maximum amount ($) bound what can be loaded onto a card. Leave either empty for no limit in that direction.
- Preset 1 ($), Preset 2 ($), and Preset 3 ($) are the shortcut buttons a cashier taps instead of typing an amount. Pick the three values you actually sell, such as 25, 50, and 100.
Presets are a convenience, not a restriction. A cashier can still type any amount inside your minimum and maximum.
Expiry
Section titled “Expiry”Turn Expire newly-issued cards on and set Expires after (days) to give newly issued cards a life span. Leave it off and issued cards never expire.
Two things about expiry are worth knowing before you turn it on.
- Expiry is fixed at the moment a card is issued. Changing this setting later, or turning it off, does not extend or shorten a card that has already been sold.
- Expiry and reload are mutually exclusive. With expiry on, cards cannot be topped up. With expiry off, they can. It is a choice between disposable cards that run out and permanent, reloadable ones, and the page says which one you are on as you switch.
Check your local rules before you set an expiry. Some places limit or forbid it.
Printing
Section titled “Printing”Under Printing, turn on the option to print a gift card slip when a card is sold. The slip is an extra card-style piece printed alongside the receipt, with a scannable barcode on it, so a customer who bought a balance has something to hand over. Preprinted plastic cards are skipped, because the customer already holds the card.
Message on the slip prints at the foot of every slip. A receipt roll is about 42 characters wide, so keep the lines short. Expiry is printed separately, so clearing this message will not remove it.
You need a receipt printer paired to the register for any of this to reach paper. See Set up a receipt printer.
If it goes wrong
Section titled “If it goes wrong”If Save changes will not run, something on the page is outside its bounds. The usual causes are a maximum below the minimum, an expiry turned on with no number of days, or a slip message that is too long. The field that is wrong is marked.
