Stripe card payments
Stripe takes card payments three ways: Tap to Pay on the device itself, a Bluetooth reader paired to a register, or a countertop terminal assigned to a register by a manager. Setting it up is: connect your Stripe account once for the store, give every outlet a street address, then choose a reader mode on each register.
Tap to Pay is available on Android devices. It is not available in this build on iPhone or iPad.
Connect your Stripe account
Section titled “Connect your Stripe account”- In the back office, go to Settings > Payment settings.
- On the Stripe tile, select Connect. You are sent to Stripe to finish its own account setup, then returned to OLET.
- If Stripe’s own requirements are not finished, the tile reads Setup incomplete and offers Finish setup, which sends you back to the same Stripe flow. Once Stripe is satisfied, the tile reads Connected.
When the tile first reads Connected, OLET creates the Stripe payment method for you, or switches the existing one back on, so the register has a card tender to show. If another payment method is already called Stripe, OLET does not create a second one and tells you to rename it and reconnect. Disconnect switches the Stripe payment method off. See Payment methods overview.
Give every outlet an address
Section titled “Give every outlet an address”Once Stripe is connected or its setup is pending, the payment settings page shows an Outlets table with a Stripe readiness column for each one. An outlet needs a street address, city, state, and ZIP before Stripe payments will work there. An outlet missing one shows Add address, a link straight to that outlet’s settings.
A register at an outlet with no address on file cannot take a Stripe payment. The register shows “This outlet needs a street address for Stripe” and says an admin can add it in your OLET account (Settings > More settings > Outlets and registers).
Add a countertop terminal
Section titled “Add a countertop terminal”Countertop terminals are set up by a manager in the back office, then used by whichever register they are assigned to.
- Under Countertop terminals, select Add terminal.
- Choose the Device the terminal is for, type the Registration code printed on the terminal, and optionally a Label.
- Select Add terminal.
A terminal is bound to a device, not a register directly. If the row reads Needs reassignment, the device behind it was disconnected, removed, or moved to another register: delete the terminal and add it again for the right device. Assign to a device on a terminal with no device carries its label over to the new one.
Choose a reader mode on the register
Section titled “Choose a reader mode on the register”- In the register app, open Settings, then Stripe card reader.
- Under Reader mode, choose Tap to Pay on this device (Android only), Bluetooth reader, or Countertop terminal.
- Tap to Pay uses the device’s own NFC to read a card, no reader to pair. It needs Location switched on and granted to OLET, the same as Square and Zettle. The Stripe card reader row in Settings now describes only the Bluetooth reader and the countertop terminal, but the dialog still offers Tap to Pay on Android.
- Bluetooth reader. Select Search for readers, turn the reader on and hold its power button until the light flashes, then select it from the list once it appears.
- Countertop terminal connects to whichever terminal a manager assigned this device in the back office. There is nothing to pair here: if none is assigned, the dialog says so and names where to fix it.
A connected Bluetooth reader shows Update reader when Stripe has a firmware update for it. Required updates install on their own the next time the reader is used, and the register shows a progress bar it will not let you dismiss until the update finishes. Forget this reader disconnects it and clears the saved pairing, so the next connection starts over from Search for readers.
If Location or Bluetooth is off for OLET, the dialog names only the ones that are, for example “Location is off for OLET. Turn it on in Settings to pair a card reader.” Select Open settings to fix it. On Android the Bluetooth permission is called Nearby devices, and the app shows Location for card payments first to explain why it asks.
If Stripe is not ready for the store, the dialog shows Stripe not connected, Stripe setup isn’t finished, or This outlet needs a street address for Stripe, each with a short instruction for an admin and a Check again button. Fix it in the back office, then select Check again.
Take a card payment
Section titled “Take a card payment”- On Collect payment, select the card method.
- The dialog shows the amount and says to follow the prompts on the reader or device.
- When the payment lands, the register moves on to the confirmation panel, the same as any other method.
If the payment does not go through, the register shows the reason and offers to try again. Nothing is recorded against the sale until it succeeds, so the amount is still owed.
If it goes wrong
Section titled “If it goes wrong”- The card button is missing on the register. There is no active Stripe payment method, or it is unchecked for this outlet. Both are in Settings > Payment settings.
- Stripe not connected. An admin can connect it on the Stripe tile under Settings > Payment settings.
- Stripe setup isn’t finished. The account is connected but Stripe’s own setup is not finished. An admin selects Finish setup on the tile.
- This outlet needs a street address for Stripe. An admin adds one in the outlet’s settings.
- This device can’t use Tap to Pay. Choose a Bluetooth reader in Settings instead. This is expected on iPhone and iPad in this build.
- No countertop terminal is assigned to this device. A manager assigns one under Settings > Payment settings on the Stripe tile.
- No readers found. Turn the Bluetooth reader on and hold its power button until the light flashes, then search again.
- Card reader disconnected. Reconnecting. The register lost contact with the reader and is retrying on its own.
