# Take payment

Collect what the customer owes on one tender or several, give the change, and print or email the receipt

Pressing **Pay** on the sell screen opens **Collect payment**. The order sits on one side and the payment methods on the other, and you stay there until the whole amount is covered.

The figure at the top is what is owed right now. It is labeled **Total due** before anything has been taken and **Remaining** once part of it has.

## Take the whole amount on one tender

Select the payment method the customer is using. The buttons are the payment methods your store has switched on, so the register only ever offers tenders you actually accept.

**Cash** opens a dialog showing the amount due. Type what the customer handed over into **Amount tendered ($)**, or tap one of the **Quick amounts**, which are the note values that cover the sale. A quick amount collects in one tap. Then select **Collect**. If what you typed is less than the amount due, OLET says **Insufficient** and will not take it.

**Card** hands the amount to the card reader and waits for it. Follow the prompts on the reader. If it fails, the dialog shows **Card error** with the reason, and **Retry** and **Cancel**. Some failures add a button above them. On Zettle, a register that is not signed in offers **Sign in to Zettle**, then tells you to tap **Retry**. See [Zettle card reader](/resources/help/payments/zettle-card-reader/).

**A payment taken elsewhere**, such as a check or a bank transfer, is recorded rather than processed. Confirm the amount and type in a reference so the row can be matched to wherever the money actually is.

**A gift card** asks for the card first, then draws down whatever is on it, up to the amount due.

## Split a payment across tenders

Use this when a customer pays part in cash and part on a card, or across two cards.

1. On **Collect payment**, select **Split payment**.
2. Type what the first payment should be into **Amount for first payment ($)**, or select **50/50** to halve it. OLET shows what is still owed after that split.
3. Select **Apply split**.
4. The header now reads **Split amount** with the whole **Balance** underneath it. Take that first amount on whichever payment method the customer is using.
5. OLET returns you to the tender list with the rest still owing. Take it the same way, splitting again if it needs to go across a third tender.

There is no limit on how many tenders a sale ends up on. The sale finishes when the remaining amount reaches zero.

## After the payment lands

The panel says **Payment complete**, with **Change due** on it when the customer handed over more cash than the sale came to. That figure is the one to open the drawer against.

Under **Receipt**:

- **Reprint** prints the receipt again on the paired printer.
- **Email** sends it. If no customer is attached to the sale, OLET asks who to send it to first. Whether you can add a new customer there depends on your role. See [Sales history and receipts](/resources/help/selling/sales-history-and-receipts/).
- **View receipt** opens the receipt on screen, which is how you check a sale when there is no printer.

Whether a receipt prints or emails on its own at the end of every sale is a per-register setting, and you set it when you create the register. See [Outlets and registers](/resources/help/setup/outlets-and-registers/).

Under **Customer** you can attach a customer to the finished sale by searching for them, or clear one that is already there. See [Add a customer to a sale](/resources/help/selling/add-a-customer-to-a-sale/).

**Next sale** returns you to the sell screen. It also happens on its own after a few seconds, and the countdown says so. Tap it to stop it if you are not finished on this screen.

## Cancel a sale you have not taken money for

**Void sale** in the top bar deletes the sale outright. It is only there before the first tender is taken, because once money has moved the way back is a refund, not a void.

## If it goes wrong

- **No payment types configured.** No payment method is switched on for your store. An owner or manager turns them on in the back office under [**Settings > Payment settings**](/resources/help/payments/payment-types-overview/), using the **Active** switch on each method.
- **A tender shows Temporarily unavailable and will not select.** That payment method has been paused platform-wide, not by your store. Take payment on a different tender for now.
- **Cannot take this payment.** The register cannot drive that payment method. Either the method has not finished syncing to the device, in which case sync and try again, or it is a kind of payment this device cannot process.
- **Square not connected**, **Square needs a location**, **Stripe not connected**, **Stripe setup isn't finished**. The card processor is not ready for the store. The message says an admin can fix it in the back office under Settings > More settings > Payment settings. Take the payment another way meanwhile.
- **The reader did not respond.** The amount has not been taken. Nothing is recorded until the payment actually lands, so try the tender again.
- **Receipt not printed.** The sale is complete and only the print failed. Check the printer, then use **Reprint**.

## Where to go next

Read [Add a customer to a sale](/resources/help/selling/add-a-customer-to-a-sale/) to attach the sale to someone before you take payment rather than after.
