Set up the ways your customers can pay, choose which outlets take each one, and switch one off without deleting it

A payment method is one of the buttons a cashier sees when they take payment. You decide which ones exist, which outlets offer them, and whether each one is currently accepted.

They live in the back office under **Settings > Payment settings**. The page has two halves: **Payment integrations** at the top, where you connect a card processor, and **Payment methods** underneath, where you set up the buttons themselves.

## Card processors switch their own method on

Each card processor has a tile under **Payment integrations**. You do not have to add the payment method by hand:

- **Square.** After you connect and choose a location, OLET creates the Square payment method, or switches the existing one back on.
- **Stripe.** When the account reaches **Connected**, OLET does the same for Stripe.
- **Zettle.** Select **Enable** on the Zettle tile. See [Zettle card reader](/resources/help/payments/zettle-card-reader/).

**Disconnect** on Square or Stripe, or **Disable** on Zettle, switches that payment method off at every register. Sales you have already taken are not affected.

If another payment method already has the processor's name, OLET does not create a second one. A message reads "Payment method not added" and says "A payment method called Square already exists. Rename it, then reconnect Square." Rename the existing method and connect again.

## What the table tells you

- **Payment** is the name the cashier reads on the register.
- **Provider** is who actually takes the money: cash, a gift card balance, a card processor, or money taken outside OLET and typed in by hand.
- **Adjustment** is the surcharge or cash discount attached to this method, if any.
- **Active** is the switch that decides whether registers offer it at all.

Two methods can read alike by name and behave completely differently, so the provider column is the one to check when a button is not doing what you expect.

## Add a payment method

1. Select **Add payment**.
2. Type the name the cashier will see into **Name**.
3. Choose the **Provider**. A provider that already has a method is not offered again, because a store holds one cash method, one gift card method, and one method per connected card processor. Zettle is never offered here, because you switch it on from its tile. Money taken outside OLET is the exception, so you can have a check method and a bank transfer method side by side.
4. Leave **Adjustment** as **None** unless you charge extra or take money off for this way of paying.
5. Under **Outlet availability**, uncheck any outlet that should not offer this method. Unchecked outlets will not show it.
6. Select save.

Editing works the same way, with two things fixed: a method keeps the provider it was created with, and the built-in cash and gift card methods keep their names, because those are the words your drawer report and your gift card balances use.

## Switch a method off instead of deleting it

The **Active** switch is the supported way to stop taking a way of paying. Turn it off and registers stop offering it, while every sale you have already taken keeps its record.

Built-in methods cannot be deleted at all, cash included, so the switch is the only control they have.

Registers only sync the methods that are active, so a change reaches the tills on their next sync rather than instantly. That same list is what decides whether the register asks for a cash count when you close it, so switching cash off changes the close screen too. See [Open and close a register](/resources/help/selling/open-and-close-a-register/).

A tender can also show as **Temporarily unavailable** on the register, grayed out but still listed rather than removed. That means OLET has paused it platform-side, not that anything is misconfigured on your end. Contact support if a tender you expect to work is showing this way.

## Surcharges and cash discounts

An adjustment changes the amount owed depending on how the customer pays. **Surcharge** adds to the total and **Cash discount** takes off it, either as a percentage or as a fixed amount.

The register shows the difference on the button itself, so a cashier reads the tender name with the amount it will add or remove beside it. The adjustment is locked in by the **first** payment method used on the sale, and it applies to the whole sale, so it does not change again when the rest is taken on something else.

## Turning the gift card method off

OLET refuses two things here, and neither is an error you should retry:

- Switching the gift card method off while your store is still selling gift cards. Selling a card you will not accept is the one state OLET will not allow, and the message names the switch to move first.
- Switching it off while customers still hold balances. OLET tells you what is still outstanding and asks you to confirm before it strands that money. Confirm with **Stop accepting gift cards** and the change goes through.
