The [setup guide](/resources/help/getting-started/setup-guide/) can do the pairing for you in one step, using the first register in your first outlet. This page covers doing it by hand, which is also how you add more devices.

Pairing is what turns a freshly installed app on an iPad or iPhone into one of your tills. You do it once per device, and it takes three things in order: an outlet, a register, and a pairing code.

Outlet, register, device. An **outlet** is a shop. A **register** is a till inside that shop, and it owns the receipt numbering. A **device** is the actual iPad or iPhone standing at that till.

## Create an outlet

1. Go to [**Settings > Outlets and registers**](/resources/help/setup/outlets-and-registers/).
2. Select **Add outlet**.
3. Give it an **Outlet name** and fill in the address and contact details. These are what print on a receipt.
4. Select **Add outlet**.

## Create a register

1. Still on **Settings > Outlets and registers**, find your outlet and select **Add register**.
2. Give it a **Register name**, such as Front counter.
3. Leave **Enabled** on.
4. Under **Receipt numbering**, set a **Receipt prefix** and **Receipt suffix** if you want your receipt numbers to say which till they came from. You can leave both blank.
5. Under **At end of sale**, choose whether the register prints and emails a receipt automatically.
6. Select **Add register**.

## Get a pairing code

1. Go to [**Settings > Devices**](/resources/help/setup/devices/).
2. Find your outlet and provision a device for it. If the outlet has no register yet, the dialog tells you so and there is nothing to pair to.
3. Give the device a **Label** that says where it stands, such as Front counter iPad.
4. Pick the **Register** it will act as.
5. Select **Provision device**.

OLET shows the pairing code straight away, with a countdown next to it.

The code is 8 characters, shown in two groups. It is **one use only** and it **expires 15 minutes** after it is issued, so get it when you have the device in your hand. If it runs out, regenerate it from the same dialog. Regenerating kills the previous code, so make sure nobody else is midway through typing it.

## Pair the device

1. Install the OLET register app on the iPad or iPhone and open it. A device that has never been paired opens on **Set up this register**.
2. Type the code into **Pairing code**. It uppercases as you type, and it does not matter whether you type the dash.
3. Select **Pair register**.

Or select **Scan QR code** and point the camera at the QR code in the back office. It carries the same pairing code. The app asks for camera access the first time you press that button, and the typed code always works if you would rather not grant it.

When it works the app confirms the register is paired and moves straight on to sign-in, where staff enter their **Email or username** first. See [Sign in and switch users](/resources/help/getting-started/sign-in-and-user-switching/). There is no separate approval step in the back office.

## If it goes wrong

- **The code is refused.** Codes are single use and last 15 minutes. If somebody already used it, or it timed out, regenerate it in **Settings > Devices** and try the new one.
- **The app says the code does not look valid.** It expects the 8 characters from the back office and nothing else. Check for a missed character rather than retyping the whole thing.
- **The camera will not open.** Use the typed code. The camera is optional and some devices have it turned off at the operating-system level.
- **Someone else is already on that register.** A register runs on one device at a time. Use **Release claim** on the devices list to free it for another device, or **Replace device** to issue a fresh code and sign the current one out.
- **Pairing is temporarily unavailable.** Try again later. OLET has switched device pairing off for maintenance; it is not something wrong with your code.

## What not to do

Do not delete a register to fix a device problem. A paired device whose register has been deleted cannot recover on its own. Use **Replace device**, **Release claim**, or **Revoke** on the devices list instead. Those are the tools built for it, and only **Revoke** is permanent.
