Categories sort your products into a hierarchy, and category is one of the filters on the product list.

Go to **Catalog > Categories**. Every category appears indented under its parent, with the number of products in it.

## Add a category

1. Select **Add category**.
2. Enter a **Category name**.
3. Pick a **Parent category**, or leave it on **None (top-level category)**.
4. Select **Add category** again to save.

Categories nest three levels deep. A top-level category can hold children and those children can hold children of their own, but no further.

**Choose the parent when you create the category.** Editing a category only changes its name, so a category cannot be moved later. Create it again in the right place instead.

## Put a product in a category

Open the product, choose from the **Category** dropdown in the **Classification** section, and save. A product sits in one category at a time.

## The system category

One category is marked **System**. It holds products that have no category of their own, and you cannot rename or delete it.

## Delete a category

Select the delete icon on its row. Its products are not deleted: they move to the system category, and the confirmation tells you how many will move before you commit to it.
